Trans-Oceanic, Ink

Today, a very special (empty) journal left Chicago, Illinois–headed to Warrington, England.
In the next few weeks, somewhere across this wondrous planet of ours, a writer will open a seemingly inconspicuous package. A blank journal will fall out–‘Trans-Oceanic, Ink’ scribbled on its cover. Inside, there will be a brief note from the editor-in-chief of Literary Orphans, Mike Joyce, asking the recipient to fill some of the pages, to tell a story of the landscape in which this journal now finds itself.
Once finished, the journal will trek yet again. It will cross mountains and oceans. It will travel down busy city streets and unpaved rural roads in search of its next destination, in search of its next writer. All across the world, this little adventurer will ravenously seek out another wordsmith, another literary craftsman to adorn its pages with penmanship. And this will continue until its hunger is satiated, until its pages are full.
Months ago, we sounded the bells for writers of all regions to answer the call. We asked for those who wanted to make the world large and magical again, who wanted to pull the fiber cords from their skulls and revel in the antiquity of paid postage. From the list compiled of dedicated champions who answered the call, we selected a handful to participate in this project.
As the book travels from person to person, each participant will hand-write stories of nearby locales that inspire him/her within its pages. Locale is essential. This is the crux of the project, as we envision the location to be something personal and close to the writer–a place the author’s feet have traveled over many times, a place the author’s hands have touched.
Once completed, our participants will mail the book back, and we will tear out these inked pages, scan them, and build a book–one decent-sized volume of handwritten stories. It will be offered online in our store for anyone who wants to peruse, to cast a curious eye across a collection of tales painstakingly penned in the old-fashioned sense by our dutiful scribes. Without computers. Without the luxury of machines. With only the neurons and nerves between brain and appendage.
This, in a nutshell, is ‘TO, Ink.’ It’s our way of adding mystique to the world again. It’s our way to share what each one of us tastes and smells, sees and hears in our cities and towns miles apart from each other. It’s a web strung between all of us orphans to connect with one another and share our stories.
Warmest Regards,
